National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

PROCLAMATION
National Breast Cancer Awareness Month
October 2012

WHEREAS, October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month; and
WHEREAS, Breast cancer claims the life of almost 40,000 U.S. women a year; and 
WHEREAS, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a platform for educating citizens about the importance of early detection of breast cancer through mammography and other methods; and
WHEREAS, Detection of breast cancer at an early stage greatly improves the chances for successful treatment and survival; and
WHEREAS, Breast cancer death rates are declining due to improved detection and treatment; and
WHEREAS, Detection and treatment of breast cancer have improved thanks to research. 
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Sean Guard, Mayor of Washougal, do hereby proclaim October as:
 “National Breast Cancer Awareness Month”
Accordingly, I urge all citizens and their families to learn the facts about mammography and the importance of early detection.  I encourage our community to commend this observance to our citizens, cancer researchers, and health care providers and to participate in Breast Cancer Awareness Month activities.
